Right now in California a war is waging that may help determine the fate of our food supply. November 6 marks the day when Californians will vote for or against Proposition 37. Prop 37, if passed as a state statue, would require mandatory labeling of Genetically Modified Organisms, or GMOs. Proponents of this Proposition believe it is our right to know what is in our food, and I wholeheartedly agree.
GMOs in our food can potentially cause reproductive issues, cancer, allergic reactions, liver problems and who knows what other long term effects.
Prop 37 does not ask anyone to change the composition of the food, merely be honest in telling us exactly what we are eating so people can make informed decisions about what they put into their bodies.
Food Democracy Now has put together a great graphic showing which food companies support labeling and which ones oppose it by showing who have made contributions for or against Prop 37.
I believe it is our right to know!
If you don’t live in California, this initiative is still important. Spread the word because once labeling is required in CA, the rest of the country will follow, even if it’s simply because food companies won’t want the expense of making different packaging for different parts of the country.
YES ON 37!
