Every night it’s the same thing. We tuck my daughter into bed and she gets up about 40 times telling us she is scared of something. It’s always something different. We soothe away one fear only to have her approach us with another one 5 minutes later. It can take up to 2 hours sometimes for her to calm her mind enough to fall asleep.
She is blessed with an imagination that doesn’t quit. She’s a storyteller and is sparked by even the most benign experiences. It helps her see the beauty in just about everything, but in the dark, it becomes something more sinister. Masks come to life. Danger lurks in every shadow.
Our solution to this problem worked somewhat haphazardly. We would try and get her to focus on something good. We would provide her with a setting that we felt would evoke good thoughts and ask her to tell herself a happy story. Some nights it works, sometimes it doesn’t.
But now we have a new solution to help alleviate bedtime fears. We have a Worry Eater!
Worry Eaters are plush toys that help alleviate kids worries by “eating” them. Kids simply write their worries on a piece of paper, and place it in their Worry Eater’s mouth and zip it shut.
So she wrote her worry down on a piece of paper.
Then she put it in Polli’s mouth.
Turns out she also had about 8 other worries that night so she wrote those on very small pieces of paper and added them in too. Bedtime went a lot more smoothly than it has in a long time.
She was super excited to wake up with Polli by her side.
When I first saw Worry Eaters I knew it was something I had to try for my daughter. It’s been well over a month since Polli came to live with her and she doesn’t go anywhere without her. Not only does she sleep with her, with her worries tucked safely inside, Polli goes to school with her as well. She loves it so much she wants another one and wants to get her cousins a Worry Eater for Christmas as well.
