Ok, dwarf frogs don’t really make that sound that I can tell, but we say that a lot around here lately since we became the proud caretakers to two of them.
Wild Creations is an online store that sells what they call “EcoAquariums” – small balanced eco-systems that let you easily bring the wonders of nature right into your own home or office. The EcoAquariums come in 2 sizes: 6″x4″ and 4″x4″ and contain everything you need to maintain a balanced, healthy eco-system without a fancy tank and filter.
The holy grail of any aquarium is an eco-system in balance. Nothing is ever perfect, but Wild Creations™ gets it as close as possible. Here’s how…
Living elements inside an eco-aquarium contribute to the the needs of each other. Our Frogs inhale oxygen & exhale carbon dioxide. The living plants & alge take in carbon dioxide and expel oxygen through photosynthesis, and the natural bacteria in the living gravel convert ammonia from animal waste into nitrites providing food for the living plants. Each element relying on the other. The balance is maintained through careful matching of plants, bacteria, & animals in each Eco-Aquarium. Given ideal lighting, and an even, warm environment, a balanced eco-system can be sustained with very little outside maintenance.
We were sent a Classic EcoAquarium Starter Kit that had everything we needed to get started enjoying our new little friends.
A couple of things you need to know before getting an EcoAquarium, whether you order one for yourself or a gift you need to be aware of a few things.
- They ship you live frogs via 2-day shipping. You should be home to receive them so they stay out of extreme weather.
- Your tank will require spring water. A gallon is more than enough to rinse off the tank accessories and fill the tank the first time.
- You NEED a fish net to transfer the frogs to their new home once you have it setup.
This is what comes in the box:
Assembly was easy. I rinsed all the gravel, the rock and the bamboo in spring water, and then simply followed the directions for setting up the tank. My husband did the transfer of the frogs to the tank, they’re cute, but I draw the line at potential contact…
We do a lot of frog watching, and Abby always asks “what are frogs doing Mommy?”
And I admit, I do more of it then the kids do. They’re pretty cool!
The frogs are easy to feed. Twice a week, we put 4 little pellets into the tank through a hole in the top. About 4 times a year you need to change the water (my husband is assigned that task). That’s it!
The EcoAquarium really is a great way for my kids to learn responsibility and learn about nature and life in a way that doesn’t require a whole lot of maintenance. In fact, I’ve even learned a little bit more than I expected about dwarf frogs. The other day, they were exhibiting some odd behavior, one of the frogs was on top of the other and it looked like the top frog was squeezing the bottom frog around its middle, and certainly was holding on tight. My first instinct was that we got a “mean” one…then I realized it was quite that opposite, and did a quick search on the web to confirm my suspicions. Apparently, we have a male and a female frog and they were just being friendly. And these two, let’s just say they are friendly A LOT.
We probably don’t have to worry about the EcoAquarium being over-run by millions of tadpoles though. It seems that it’s pretty difficult to actually have them develop in the same tank as their parents, and the tadpoles would have to be moved into a tank with ideal conditions (if you can even see them) to grow and survive. I think at some point, we might get brave enough to give it a try, but in the meantime, my kids are enjoying watching the frogs “hug and wrestle” as they swim around the tank.
