Have you ever experienced an unlikely friendship?
When I was in high school I had befriended an older couple who use to frequent the doughnut shop I worked at. I didn’t have any grandparents left at that point and I really enjoyed talking to them. We had long conversations as I served coffee to them and other customers. They would bring me gifts, paid for professional photos for my high school graduation and we maintained our friendship for a couple of years even after I went off to college.
I know most teenagers wouldn’t have invested time into a relationship with strangers in their 70’s, but for some reason I did. And I learned so much from Al and Arlene. They saw the world so differently than my peers. They had wisdom and when I spoke they listened to every word. They were interested in me, and I loved hearing their stories.
I haven’t thought about Al and Arlene in many years. It’s odd to me that I actually remember their names, in the grand scheme of things they much have had a more profound impact on my life than I realized.
It makes me wonder how many other unlikely friendships I have missed along the way. How many people I didn’t bother to stop and take the time to pay attention to? How many times I allowed a first impression to prevent me from experiencing a life-changing relationship?
It’s easy to let stereotypes and things like age or disabilities impact our impression of people, often without ever even having a conversation with them. But sometimes the most unlikely relationship in the most unlikely of circumstances can change your life.
This weekend I had the opportunity to screen a brand new movie called Where Hope Grows that helped remind me of the unlikely friendship I had with Al and Arleen.
Where Hope Grows Movie
Calvin Campbell is a former professional baseball player sent to an early retirement due to his panic attacks at the plate. Even though he had all the talent for the big leagues, he struggles with the curveballs life has thrown him. Today, he mindlessly sleepwalks through his days and the challenge of raising his teenager daughter. His life is in a slow downward spiral when it is suddenly awakened and invigorated by the most unlikely person – Produce, a young-man with Down syndrome who works at the local grocery store.
Calvin slowly loses the chip on his shoulder as he begins to experience the world through Produce’s eyes. Faith, work, purpose and most importantly family, blossom into Calvin’s life as their friendship develops. The unlikely pair becomes intertwined giving Calvin’s life new meaning and purpose, but unfortunately leads to tragedy due to single decision echoed from Calvin’s past.
Where Hope Grows is a story of finding redemption through faith, hope and love.
I can’t even describe how much I enjoyed this movie. Like Calvin Campbell, I learned so much from Produce. Things that I already knew, but that I needed a little bit of reminding.
The quotes below are just a few of the messages that left a profound mark on my heart and my spirit and will forever inspire me to have a magnificent day.
