When it comes to being the mother of a teen boy, there is one absolute guarantee.
And lots of it.
Stinky feet. Stinky bodily functions. Stinky sweat.
Especially stinky sweat.
The kind of stink where it’s hard to imagine that just one boy created it.
Especially if they participate in sports or just like to stay active.
It’s not their fault, it’s pretty much a rite of passage that some, unfortunately, don’t outgrow.
So what’s a mom to do?
The first thing you need to do is to try not to embarrass them about it. Don’t mention it in public. Talk to them privately about it, tell them it’s normal, and then put a plan in place to keep it at bay. Because no kid wants to be the stinky kid.
Control The Stink – Tips for Moms of Active Teenage Boys
Wash everything – when it comes to teen boys, every item of clothing should be washed after each use. Don’t let them try and push a second wearing out of it. And make sure their dirty laundry goes right into the hamper, and not onto a pile on the floor that transfers the odor into the carpet and creates a wall of stink that you slam into every time you open their door. Don’t forget their gym uniforms! At least weekly on those if you can’t get them to bring them home daily.
Always wear socks – bare feet in shoes is just a recipe for disaster when it comes to stinky shoes. It’s bad enough with socks, but at least the sweat and odor has a chance to be absorbed into the socks which can then be tossed in the wash. If they don’t like the look of socks with their shoes, there are plenty of no-show sock brands out there. If their shoes do get sticky, supposedly a used tea bag overnight will remove the smell. I haven’t tried it, so let me know if you do.
Bring a clean shirt – encourage your teen to bring a clean shirt with them if they are going to be getting sweaty. That way they can change out of the stinky one if they want. Have them bring a plastic bag to store the dirty one in.
Find the right deodorant – not all deodorant works the same for every person and every lifestyle. Finding the right deodorant for your teen is critical to help control the stink. Make sure to get them a couple of them so they can keep one at home and one for on-the-go just in case.
So, how do you find the right deodorant?
It’s important for everyone, not just stinky active teens to actually make sure they are using the right deodorant for their needs. Sweat is not always a bad thing, it helps keep you cool when you exercise or when it’s really hot out. But sweating at an inappropriate time or having really stinky sweat is never really a good thing. Although did you know that sweat itself doesn’t actually stink? Nope.
Although did you know that sweat itself doesn’t actually stink? Nope. it’s the bacteria on our skin that stinks when they feed on the sweat.
