Is Your Home Truly Safe? The Advantages of Proactively Protecting Your Home with a Smart Home Security System is part one of a three part smart home safety series sponsored by American Family Insurance.
I live in a neighborhood in a rural-ish town of around 9,400 people. We are surrounded by fields and farms and while we are a mere 20 minutes from civilization, it’s a nice quiet area where not a lot happens.
Which is one of the reasons we moved here.
We wanted a safer place to raise our family with a bit less of the negative influences that come from a city or even a suburban area. And our little town was ranked as the 5th safest town in Indiana. Can’t get much safer than that, right?
According to SafeWise, our town boasts the following impressive statistics for 2015:
- Violent Crimes per 1,000: 1.27
- Property Crimes per 1,000: 8.17
But don’t be fooled by the statistics, these are FBI reported statistics and may not illustrate the whole picture. We don’t know if there were attempted crimes that were unknowingly derailed by barking dogs or security systems. And there may be minor crimes not reported to the FBI.
In my area, and probably in yours too, there is a very active Facebook community and almost daily there are mentions of items missing from garages, cars broken into (or at least opened illegally), and attempts to enter homes. There are also many reports of strange vehicles and suspicious solicitors going door-to-door without permits.
I’m sure that many of these unreported incidents are overzealous people being overly cautious, but we have just as good a chance of being a victim to one of these crimes as anyone.
So why risk it?
Take, for example, the windows on the lower level of my house. They are right at ground level which makes them an obvious target for break-ins. Or teenagers trying to sneak out of the house.
And we also have a sidelight next to our door and without the right kind of deadbolt, a simple break of the glass could let a would-be intruder into our home.
The scenario below shows a single doorknob with a sidelight. All they would have to do is break the window and they can get the door open with a simple push down on the lever.
In this day and age, it’s really pretty easy to be proactive about the safety and security of your home, and it offers additional advantages too.
The Advantages of Proactively Protecting Your Home with a Smart Home Security System
A connected or smart home security system contains a wide range of tools to help you protect your home. Many systems have security cameras, door alarms, window alarms, garage alarms, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and even doorbells with cameras built-in. Modern technology has helped make this kind of advanced system available to the average homeowner at affordable prices.
Systems like this offer the following advantages:
Peace of mind
Peace of mind is probably the most important advantage of having a smart home security system. No matter where you are, you know that your home is protected.
New smart home security systems provide immediate access to your system right from the palm of your hand. The smartphone apps put alerts and control of the system right in your pocket, wherever you are.
Beyond providing alarms and security cameras, smart home devices allow you to control lights when you are gone for an extended period of time or if you forgot to turn them off. You can also adjust the temperature in case of unpredictable weather or turn it to your ideal temperature right before you arrive home.
A connected home can save you on energy costs by allowing you to control lighting and your thermostat right from your phone. You no longer have to leave lights on all day if you plan to be home late, simply turn them on once it gets dark. And if you forget to turn the thermostat down when no one will be home, you can do that right from an app as well.
Also, companies like American Family Insurance may offer a discount if you install a smart home device or protective home system.
