I’ve seen Schleich toys before. Picked them up. Touched them. Admired them. But never bought them. The main reason I’d never purchased them was because I thought my kids were too young to appreciate them. Now that my son is almost seven it is about time we introduced these quality toys to him, so when I was offered a couple of Schleich toys to review I simply couldn’t say no.
This is actually the first of three reviews I will be doing of some Schleich toys. We have a cool variety of things to share with you, and a few giveaways to go along with them.
The company, founded 75 years ago by Friedrich Schleich in Schwäbisch Gmünd, is one of the largest toy manufacturers in Germany and a leading provider of original play concepts internationally. The famous toy figurines from Schleich are sold in over 50 countries and have found their way into children’s rooms all around the world.
For their 75th anniversary, Schleich has some special games and prizes online on their website. Kids can have fun playing the games and enter to win one of 75 prizes including a Wild Life Play Set.
“We are excited to share our 75th Anniversary celebration with our North American customers,” states Mary Ludovico, Director of Marketing for Schleich North America. “We believe that today’s global parent is embracing the qualities of imaginative play and recognizes the true play value of the world of Schleich. This is a major reason why we are communicating the history and longevity of the brand to our customers so they can share in our anniversary celebration with us.”
The first toys we were sent were the Airplane, the Indian Elephant and the Indian Elephant Calf. The Airplane, through the end of 2010, comes in specially-marked packages with the 75th Anniversary jubilee symbol. Inside these special boxes is a voucher that you can redeem online for a collectible FREE and EXCLUSIVE zebra-striped figure—a pig, giraffe, penguin or kangaroo.
You can use the store locator link on their website to find both local and online retailers that carry the Schleich products.
Providing imaginative play for a child’s pretend travels, this airplane will travel around the world with their Schleich figurines. The Airplane comes with a pilot and has cockpit doors, fright bay, engine compartment and more. It portrays the type of traditional fixed wing prop-plane commonly seen in the widest regions of Africa, the Australian Outback and the plains of Argentina.
The Schleich Airplane required some minimal, easy assembly. It is made of plastic but is a nice quality and the pieces snapped together easily yet firmly. The wheels actually turn as does the propeller and the flap on the back fin. It comes with a pilot who is removable through the pilots door, plus there are three other cargo doors that open. The Schleich airplane looks great and plays great!
Indian Elephant and Calf
A long trunk, tough tusks and big ears are bold features of this lowly leaf-eater. Indian elephants look similar to African elephants but have shorter tusks and smaller ears. Indian elephants live in family groups that are composed of between two and ten elephants. This elephant family would provide a great introductory for the detail in Schleich figurines.
The Schleich Indian Elephants look so real. They are super sturdy and very detailed. They seem to inspire imagination just by looking at them. When I asked my son what he liked about the elephants, his favorite thing is that “the baby elephant can fit in the airplane.”
Over all I am very pleased with the quality of these toys and their ability to inspire his imagination. We’ve spent some time on the Schleich website picking out more of their toys he wants to ask Santa to bring him.
