I thought my sweet Max was a gentle loving guy until this morning.
We let him outside and Ed was standing at the patio doors and said “look, Max has a bunny”, but he said it kind of incredulously. I didn’t believe him but looked anyway and sure enough. Then it hit us, MAX HAS A BUNNY! So I opened the door and yelled at him to “drop it” (yeah, my dogs speak english, don’t yours?) and went out on to the deck. Ed ran to let them in through the garage.
As I did this, Max looked up at me, bunny in mouth (did I mention it was not a full grown bunny…poor baby) perked up and came PRANCING towards me pretty much saying “look Mom, I caught you a bunny.” He had this thing squished between his teeth and it was kind of screaming. He started to come up on the deck with it (I assume to lay it as a prize at my feet) when Ed came out the garage door and then Max dropped it.
Ed got the dogs into the house and the bunny just sat there all missing his fur and pretty much with mangled back legs. Ed said “his back legs are gone.” He wasn’t sure what he was going to do and wandered around the house, yard and garage looking for some sort of inspiration. He eventually came in and told me that he couldn’t bring himself to kill it but he thinks it is about gone on its own.
I don’t know if I can look at Max the same way ever again. What did that baby bunny ever do to him?
