During that time my son has progressed from 1st grade level to 2nd grade level in reading and just starting some third 3rd grade level skills in math.
Below you can see his initial report and his most current report.
INITIAL SKILL STATUS REPORT 10-16-10
CURRENT SKILL STATUS REPORT 12-5-10
The reporting tools available to parents with Kaplan Tutoring are pretty in-depth. Beyond what you see above, you can actually get even more details about each type of skill set that they have or have not yet completed and what level of comprehension they are at for each of them. In some ways I think it would be nice to somehow be able to see the actual lessons and activities they completed, like a playback of their session somehow. Because I don’t sit with him the whole time (he thinks that’s annoying) I would like to see how the material is presented and specifics about what he had trouble with.
Overall I believe that the Kaplan Tutoring program is really a great resource for parents. My son did not need help getting up to grade level or anything like that, he needs a challenge because he is bright and capable of more than his grade level. With Kaplan it allows him to proceed at his own pace and advances along with him.
No matter what level a child is at though, Kaplan is not a magic formula to help motivate them to improve, nor can you leave the child alone with the computer and just expect miracles. Kaplan does have a reward program in place where the child earns points based upon the activities they complete, and then can trade those points in for prizes. They call it the “Reward Zone” and they do have some great stuff that kids will want. The Rewards Zone also has badges and virtual critters that you can buy, and experience points to give them extra motivation to complete Kaplan Tutoring activities.
While it definitely helps, the Rewards Zone is not enough. Parents still need to take an active role in helping to motivate their kids to log on and complete activities. For me, my son would ask to play a video game and I would tell him he had to go on Kaplan for 30 minutes first. It didn’t work every time, but it worked most of the time.
I really do think that the tools available with Kaplan Tutoring can help bridge the gap for kids who need to improve to grade level, help reinforce and expand the skills of those kids who are at grade level, and provide a challenge for kids who are already above grade level and take their learning to the next level.
