When my kids were babies and young toddlers, we learned very quickly what we needed to do to keep them safe. Kids get into stuff. It’s a given. As parents it’s our job to protect them from the dangers our kids can get into before they are old enough to know better.
Luckily we managed to do ok when it came to baby-proofing. Most of our incidents revolved around making a mess of somethng that was not overly dangerous, it was just annoying.
I remember with my daughter (she is 5 now) that my husband would ALWAYS leave the baby powder open after changing her diaper.
And when I went in to use it I would find it open and tell him that he needs to close it. He would insist that it didn’t matter because he was putting it out of her reach on top of the changing table. I told him that one day there would be proof that I was right.
One day it would come back to bite him in the butt.
And one day it did.
I was in the kitchen cooking and my daughter was at the crawling stage and was strangely quiet. She had full run of the hallway and her bedroom, the rest of the rooms were closed off.
And any parent knows that quiet children means either 2 things. That they are sleeping or they are getting into trouble. It’s rarely because they are sleeping, however.
So I left the kitchen and headed down the hallway only to discover a trail of white powder leading out of my daughter’s bedroom into the hallway.
My “I told you so moment!”
While I wasn’t surprised by the fact that she got into the baby powder (she’s a climber and an evil genius), it just goes to show that with active babies you never know what might happen. They can get into things that you think they can’t and make a HUGE MESS.
Do you have a baby-proofing mishap story?
