Thank you Name.Kitchen for inspiring me to help my business stand out.
One of the things I love about the United States is the entrepreneurial spirit and the small ideas that can inspire someone to be brave enough to step out on their own and achieve their goals to make their dreams come true. It’s amazing how many successful small businesses were established on a single, simple yet clever idea. An idea and a passion for doing things just a little differently than someone else.
Take for example, a company called The Fermentista’s Kitchen from Applegate, OR. The Fermentista’s Kitchen is a business built upon, of all things, fermented veggies. The company was started by a husband and wife (Kirsten and Christopher Shockey) who own a 40-acre farm after receiving a pot of homemade sauerkraut for Christmas one year along with a fermenting cookbook. Moms are funny like that. They give practical gifts. Some moms even give gifts that inspire an entire business!
When it came time to choose a domain for their business, the Shockey’s wanted something that had a culinary feel to align with their goals of teaching and consulting the art of fermentation. A .com just didn’t have the unique style and flair that they needed to convey that feel so they opted for the .kitchen extension.
Today, you have so many options when it comes to branding your business to take advantage of the amazing marketing tools we have at our disposal. One of the key decision you have to make is your domain name or URL. The address on the web where people will find you. It will convey what your brand is all about in just a few short characters. Before you were limited to a name that ended in a .com making it difficult to stand out. But now, now you have some creative options that can not only help define your brand but help make it unique as well.

I really connected with the Shockey’s reasons for choosing a .kitchen domain for their business. It adds a level of sophistication to the name and let’s you know that it involves a hands-on experience. This same reasoning is why I choose the .kitchen extension for my new website called The Oily Kitchen. It contains tips, information and recipes for cooking with essential oils. My goal was for the .kitchen extension to convey a feeling of comfort and familiarity to something not a lot of people have considered doing – cooking with essential oils.
