This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Genesis Bows. All opinions are 100% mine.
When I was a kid, I don’t think I had ever even heard of archery, let alone knew what it was. But today, it’s definitely become something we’ve seen and heard a lot about, especially because of the Hunger Games series. What kid wouldn’t want to have the skills Katniss has in an attempt to save the world?
Our small town has archery classes with the park district every year, but I have to admit that the idea always seemed a little crazy to me. Archery seemed complicated, difficult to master, and I never really understood the point of it.
Until I tried it.
I had the opportunity to design a Genesis® Bow for my son and surprise him with it. He was excited. Very excited.
I used the Genesis Build-a-Bow on the Genesis Bows website to customize his bow. You can pick the bow style, whether it is right or left handed, and customize many of different colors of the bow. It makes it unique and completely your own!
Green is my son’s favorite color so I used that as the base for building him a cool looking Genesis® Original Bow. I also got the kit with arrows, a quiver and an arm guard.
From here I was certain we were going to have to consult a professional. I know nothing, as I mentioned, about archery except that it looks really cool. So we pulled up Genesis Archery on YouTube and we watched a video. One short video. And then decided to give it a try.
First, we learned how he should stand. Feet shoulder width apart with the front foot slightly back. Next we learned how he should put his hand on the bow and how to hold the bow against his left side so he can set the arrow. He is right-handed.
Then we learned how to put the arrow on the bow.
And how to set it against the string with the odd colored “fletching” pointing up which ends up facing you when you lift the bow into position.
He then learned how to set his fingers on the string. Some recommend 3 fingers below the arrow, some just 2. He was more comfortable with the 2.
Next was how to draw and set the “anchor” where his hand rests against his cheek before he releases the bow.
His right arm is parallel to the ground with the elbow slightly up.
And then he anchors it.
He hit the target the very first time.
I HAD to try it myself.
Yeah. Mine flew over the target and into the grass. Not so natural…although I’m left-handed and it’s a right-handed bow. Yeah that’s it!
But wow! What an amazing feeling letting go of that bow string. Feeling the power and the tension and just releasing it. And then staying very still until the arrow hits the target (or doesn’t hit the target in my case).
My son said I should get my own bow so we can both practice. I think that’s a great idea! Mine will be pink.
Archery is a very fast-growing sport. It helps kids develop confidence, focus, hand-eye coordination and patience. It’s for anyone of any age and any athletic ability. The sport of archery is not promoted as being about hunting or weapons, it falls into the category of a hobby like table tennis or bowling.
The Genesis Original Bow is the official bow of the National Archery in the Schools (NASP®) organization. It is used in over 13,000 schools across the United States and the NASP has maintained a zero archery-related injury record since its founding in 2002.
Archery is fun, engaging and safe thanks to Genesis! Genesis compound bows are the perfect introduction to the sport of archery. They do not have a specific draw length which means kids cannot outgrow them nor will they develop bad habits from an ill-fitting bow. The draw length is varied enough (15″ – 30″) that the entire family can enjoy this unique sport. All Genesis bows are completely customizable with the Build-A-Bow tool.
And with a Genesis Bow kit and target, you can enjoy archery right in your own backyard without having to visit a range. And it really can be something you can do together as a family. It gets you outside and sharing in a common, fun activity.
A Genesis Bow would make the perfect gift idea for the kids on your shopping list this holiday season!
