Just the other day I was complaining to a friend that there aren’t really any family-friendly sitcoms on television anymore. A big part of my childhood memories include watching sitcoms with my parents. Some of the best sitcoms ever. These shows helped define a decade, and helped shape the person I was to eventually become.
A sitcom called Full house ran from 1987 to 1995. I was 15 when it started and very much related to the sibling squabbles between DJ and Stephanie.
Plus, because…..John Stamos.
Well, my struggle with finding a family-friendly sitcom may very well be over thanks to Netflix. Now the Full House cast is back as the Fuller House cast with a full season of episodes that airs only on Netflix.
Fuller House picks up after Full House left off….”29 years later” and from the outset, except for a few wrinkles, not much has actually changed. Same cast. Same set. Same jokes. But there is something familiar about those jokes. Something nostalgic. And the show is not afraid to make fun of itself and illicit a laugh at its own expense. Some of the humor seemed forced at first, like they were literally trying to make us feel like 29 years hadn’t passed, but that faded after the first couple of episodes.
While some of it was predictable and even corny, I laughed out loud quite a bit and my daughter was as well. She didn’t get all of the jokes, especially the ones that referred to the original show, but she does want to go back and watch Full House once we are done with Season 1 of Fuller House.
“How rude!” – I laughed a long time after that one.
Because…John Stamos. Danny, Uncle Jessie, Becky and Joey aren’t full-time cast members beyond the first episode, though they make repeat appearances and I admit that I wasn’t optimistic about how the show would be without them. It’s funny. Cute and corny, but overall a great option for me to watch with my kids.
And the older son reminds me SO MUCH of my own son that I want to watch just to hear the smarty-pants comments and the faces he makes.
Were you a fan of Full House when it was on? What are your thoughts about seeing the Fuller House cast after all these years?
