Embracing Your Second Calling – Find Passion and Purpose for the Rest of Your Life by Dale Bourke is a book that helps women to realize that the second half of their life is a time for renewed purpose, passion and meaning. The book is geared towards middle-aged women with grown children, but as a mom of young children in her late 30’s, I still found a lot of great things in this book.
The book is filled with examples from Bourke’s life that illustrate the principles she introduces, with the main theme revolving around discovering and listening to God’s call for your life. From many women, middle age brings with it a lot of extra time on our hands, especially for those of us who have been stay-at-home moms. In this book, Bourke parallel’s her journey with that of Naomi in the book of Ruth from the Bible. Naomi faced middle age having lost her husband and her sons, yet by listening and trusting in God’s call she found a new purpose as a grandmother.
I really relate to the description Bourke gives of feeling different than I did when I was younger. I’m more patient, my grand dreams of adventure are more muted and I look for things with more purpose for my life. I don’t focus as much on my appearance as I used to (rather, I’m more interested in being and feeling healthy), and ultimately I’m paying more attention to trying to hear the whisper of God in my life.
A woman’s guide to the second half of life.
Do you ever wonder if the best of life is in the past? Are you longing for more passion and purpose in the second half of your life? Take a deep breath and prepare for a great adventure as Dale Hanson Bourke resoundingly affirms that midlife is a time for reflection but also a time for action. In Embracing Your Second Calling, she challenges women to respond to God’s call specifically for this season of life and offers practical ideas for finding new meaning.
Bourke’s vulnerability and story-driven approach offers essential principles and specific suggestions as well as interactive elements including:
Questions for reflection and going deeper Ideas on how to become more involved Prayers for wisdom and commitment Action steps for moving forward For women searching for God’s purpose and passion in middle age and beyond this book offers an inspirational road map to meaning and adventure.
This book is very readable and relate-able. I enjoyed reading Bourke’s anecdotes about how she grew and changed as her second calling took shape. I’m not there just yet, but I will be, and having the insight this book provides will serve me well in the coming years.
