Everyone knows that eating right and exercise are critical for a healthy body. It’s the first and last thing we think about when we consider getting healthy. And while it is a crucial starting point, diet and exercise alone aren’t enough to be truly healthy. Which is good news, because let’s be honest, sometimes you skip a workout. And sometimes you don’t always eat as well as you should.
But we sure do beat ourselves up over it if we miss a workout or indulge in something unhealthy.
Being healthy is about balance, though. It’s about being healthy in all areas of our lives – mind, body, and soul, not just body. And certainly not focusing on one at the expense of the others.
I’ve been at the point in my life where I put so much energy into eating right and being active that I totally neglected the spiritual and emotional side. The more energy I put into my diet and exercise, the less happy I felt. So I realized that something must be missing because despite all my efforts I just didn’t feel healthy.
Stretch: Stretching is entirely different than exercise. Stretching is relaxed and allows you to get in-tune with your body. It helps keep you flexible as you get older and helps prevent injury. Stretching also increases blood flow and circulation and can help give you better posture.
Use a Moisturizer: Your skin is the largest organ in your body and even if you don’t think you have dry skin, using a facial moisturizer is an insurance policy that helps hydrate your skin, reduce wrinkles, give you a smooth, glowing complexion and help prevent environmental skin damage. It just feels nice too.
Indulge in a Guilty Pleasure: A guilty pleasure doesn’t have to involve food. It could be watching soap operas or court TV or playing a game on your tablet. I have found that meditation helps with goal setting and with helping me deal with things during the day much better than I did before. If you pray, your meditation can also involve prayer.
Read: I always have books and magazines scattered around the house. Even in the bathroom. I love the escape even a few minutes of reading offers. Reading can help improve concentration, reduce stress, and just help keep your brain stimulated and active.
Tackle a Project: Most of us have small projects around the house that we have been procrastinating. Changing out a faucet, painting a deck, cleaning out a closet, etc. These chores tend to build up until the list seems daunting. Tackling one project (or part of a project) every day will help you feel accomplished and help you enjoy your home rather than see it as only a long list of honey-dos. We have been painting our deck recently. It’s a slow process but so therapeutic. I hope it’s a project that drags on because I love seeing the progress as it goes from unfinished to primed, to painted. It’s going to look awesome!
