The Chicago Cubs won the world series.
They really did!
Which breaks the Christmas shopping arena wide open by adding a whole new avenue of gift ideas for the Cubs fan in your life. Although, if you have ever shopped for licensed MLB gear, you know that it is high quality and comes with an even higher price tag, which means you may have to consider compromising your holiday budget. Or come up with some ways to earn some extra cash.
There are a lot of creative ways to earn extra money during the holidays, but the easiest way to find money that’s already yours is by checking out the Illinois Treasurer’s I-Cash Program to discover unclaimed cash that may belong to you.
About the Illinois Treasurer’s I-Cash Program
The Illinois Treasurer’s I-Cash Program is this cool online search that allows you to look for your name in a database of Illinois residents. This database contains millions of unclaimed property listings including things like cash, stocks, mutual funds and safety deposit box contents. The Illinois Treasurer’s Office secures this unclaimed property from banks, insurance companies, utility companies and other places that have property from Illinois residents that have gone unclaimed. By law, the Illinois Treasurer’s Office has to hold this property until the rightful owner or heir comes forward to claim it. In 2015 someone came forward to claim $2.2 million in property through this program.
Now, don’t go getting all excited, the average claim is $2,900, but that is still a whole lot of money that you didn’t even know you had!
If you are an Illinois resident (current or former), you can discover what unclaimed property might be waiting for you by visiting the Illinois Treasurer’s Unclaimed Property Page and searching for your name. One in four adults finds that they have property to claim. I grew up in Illinois and lived there much of my adult life as well so I did a search for my name and it turns out I have some unclaimed property!
It’s not a lot but it’s enough to do some Christmas shopping for my favorite Chicago Cubs fan. To claim the property (it’s free!), you simply fill out an online form, sign it and mail it along with proof of ownership. Within a few weeks, you will receive a check. Make sure you check back every 6 months as the Illinois Treasurer’s Office adds hundreds of thousands of properties to the database each year.
For some ideas on how to spend your unclaimed property, I put together a list of Cubs Fan Holiday Gift Ideas for the Chicago Cubs fan on your Christmas shopping list.
