Earth Day is intended to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth and its environment. It occurs every year in the Northern Hemisphere on April 22nd.
Environmental awareness is growing in scope and purpose each year and it is the only event celebrated simultaneously around the globe regardless of religious background or nationality. It is a universal event that ties the world together for a common goal – to protect our planet and its resources.
Across the globe, people and companies will support Earth Day and a company called Xeko is no exception.
Xeko is an award-winning trading card game with a mission: entertain and delight kids while teaching them about animals, introducing them to the principles of biodiversity, and taking them on an adventure to some of the most precious and remarkable places on the planet.
Xeko was inspired by the work of Conservation International (CI), an organization with a simple but vital mission—to preserve the diversity of life on Earth and demonstrate that human societies are able to live harmoniously with nature. Amy Tucker, Xeko’s creator, noted that CI approaches these tasks by targeting the world’s most species-rich places—biodiversity hotspots—and raising the level of awareness about each hotspot’s plight. “Kids are more likely to pay attention to and care about the fates of places and animals they’ve heard about, and a collectible card game was a natural choice for presenting endangered creatures and their habitats in a compelling and memorable way,” said Tucker.
In addition to the card game, Xeko also has a line of plush “pals” designed to bring awareness of endangered animal species to kids. The Xeko Pals are high-quality and are made of certified organic cotton and filled with a soy based stuffing. The Pals will delight kids while they raise awareness of threatened species and raise money for worldwide conservation efforts. Each Xeko Pal comes with a “mission code” that allows kids to join in the adventure at Xeko.com where their Pals will come to life!
The Xeko Pals include:
*Tomato Frog from Madagascar (debuting Spring ’09)
*Orca from Indonesia (debuting Spring ’09)
*Giant Panda from China
*Sumatran Flying Squirrel from Indonesia
*Hairy-Eared Dwarf Lemur from Madagascar
The age range for Xeko Pals is boys and girls ages 8-12 and 4% of net sales are donated to Conservation International. You can buy Xeko Games and Xeko Pals at a number of specialty toys stores across the country and national retailers such as Barnes & Noble and Amazon.com.
In honor of Earth Day, Xeko is giving one of their Pals away to a lucky What’s That Smell? reader!
