When you say the words “Boy Scouts” I think a lot of people envision simply badges and camping. They don’t look much beyond that and don’t really fully appreciate and understand the extent of the learning and adventure that comes with being a Boy Scout.
My son is not currently a Boy Scout, although we did attend a few Cub Scout meetings last year. He is very interested and we even subscribe to the Boys Scouts ‘Boys’ Life’ magazine, but for now while we try and diagnose and get a handle on some allergies my son has, we decided to wait another year or two to get back into it.
The couple of meetings we did attend with our local pack were fun and interesting. I was impressed with how they embraced having the whole family attend. Considering I generally have my daughter in tow, it was nice knowing that having her there was not a problem. My son seemed to enjoy the activities they provided at the meetings and especially liked making new friends. In addition to all that, I liked that God and the American flag were an important part of how they started each meeting.
Boy Scouts of America help make kids more well rounded, providing them with experiences that most parents just can’t recreate. Whether it is outdoor adventures like rafting, canyoneering and rapelling or learning valuable skills such as how to play chess and how to prepare for a test, the comaradarie of the pack makes it easy for kids to learn while they have fun at the same time. And skills and activities like these provide boys with confidence and make them more ready to face the world!
Scouting has so many benefits that go well beyond just putting up a tent. In addition to what I’ve already mentioned, below is a list of some of the additional benefits of being a Boy Scout:
- Physical fitness / active lifestyle
- Learning about proper nutrition
- Science skills
- Future technology projects
- And so much more…
