On Saturday at Bloggers on Bourbon we got a to experience a tour of a real Southern Plantation House complete with a period tour guide. The Houmas House generously provided a tour for our entire group and Global Resort Homes treated us to lunch at the Plantation. The entire experience was one I will never forget.
Outfitted with our AWESOME shirts from Zazzle, we were taken to the plantation in a bus sponsored by Community Coffee. I’d never had their coffee before and my husband and I are particular about our coffee. Community Coffee is a new favorite here in our house. Once we arrived at the plantation, we were greeted by Shannon Lane, a local travel blogger, and she served up mimosa’s upon our arrival, and later we got to have tea and lemonade from Firefly Vodka.
Our tour started when a southern belle complete with hoop skirt and parasol made her way over to us and she was as authentic as the house which was built in the early 1800’s. We toured a bunch of rooms in the house, heard great anecdotes about the history of the house and many of the antiques inside it. I highly recommend this tour if you are ever in the area. Even the owner of the plantation, Kevin Kelly (he acquired the property in 2003) was at the plantation and shared lunch with us. He is apparently a dog lover – actually marrying two of his dogs together (many weddings are now performed there regularly) and the gift shop is filled with stuffed dogs and dog statues. We even got to meet his dogs!
