I received a Mizuno glove and free glove steaming to facilitate this review of baseball glove steaming.
Ah, the joys of getting a new baseball or softball glove. Fresh, new leather. It’s a blank canvas yet to be scarred by a speeding baseball. It even smells good.
You’re excited to slide your hand into that new glove, knowing that it is going to help make you a better player.
Except when you do put the glove on you realize that it’s stiff, unforgiving and nowhere near game ready. At least not if you actually expect to catch the ball.
When I was a kid, my dad would oil up our new softball gloves and then put rubber bands around it and leave it that way for days or even weeks to help condition the glove to get it ready to use. Even then, with all his effort, it still took time to break it in properly.
All these years later, I always thought that was the way you break in a new glove.
But there is another way.
It’s called baseball glove steaming and it can turn something that used to take weeks into something that takes mere minutes. Mizuno knows that every ball player wants that perfect broken-in fit. That they need their glove to fit, well, like a glove in order to allow them to play their best. Which is why they have teamed up with Dick’s Sporting Goods to offer Glove Steaming Services at most Dick’s locations.
Breaking in a new glove is a very important process, but can be time consuming and tough to get just right on your own. By using the in-store glove steamer, our Glove PROS can break your new leather glove into game-ready condition in minutes. The steaming quickly softens the leather and relaxes the seams, which can take weeks to do at home. Your Glove PRO will then work with you to shape and mold the pocket and hinge points in the seams to custom fit to your hand and preferences. Within minutes, you’ll leave our store with a broken in, game-ready glove and will be set to hit the field!
Baseball glove steaming is available at many Dick’s Sporting Goods locations all of the time, but this week only (March 18-26) in the Chicago area glove steaming is FREE with any Mizuno baseball or softball glove purchase.
I was really excited when Mizuno reached out to me and invited me to try their glove steaming service for myself. They sent a fantastic glove for my son and we headed out to Dick’s Sporting Goods to get it steamed.
I had no idea what to expect! The Pro who did our steaming was amazing. She was extremely knowledgeable and explained the process to us.
Baseball Glove Steaming
The first things she did was wet the glove with a spray bottle. She then put the glove into the steamer for a couple of minutes.
After steaming, she put the glove on a pounding pad and used a mallet to help soften the glove.
She worked on it with her hands and the mallet for a few minutes, then put it back in the steamer.
She removed the glove from the steamer and manipulated it and worked on softening it more.
It really was amazing to watch the process and I was extremely impressed with how knowledgeable she was. After working on it a second time, she then had my son try the glove to make sure it was broken in in all the right places for him based upon his grip.
She worked on it a bit more after that and then we were done. The whole process took around 10 minutes. What a time-saver! My son can begin using his new glove immediately and it already bends and folds in all the right places which helps make him a better player because it means he won’t have any downtime breaking in the new glove.
The video below shows a bit of the process:
Remember, Dicks’ Sporting Goods has glove steaming available at most locations all of the time, but THIS WEEK in the Chicago area you can get it done FREE with ANY Mizuno glove purchase. You won’t regret getting it done!
