    🌟 Why this recipe works

Air fryer tortilla chips are delicious, crispy, and healthier than fried. They use less oil when air frying them and are ready in 5 minutes, making them perfect for a quick snack.

These tortilla chips serve many purposes, from serving with dips on game night to using them as part of family dinners and as a light snack.

Mexican crispy tortillas are super easy for any home cook to prepare in minutes with just a packet of corn tortillas and a splash of olive oil required for cooking in the air fryer.

Air frying tortillas produces flawless results every time with perfect crispiness and salty flavor. They are cheap to make, perfectly crispy, and last for over a week stored correctly.

These homemade crispy chips are not your ordinary store-bought chips with artificial flavors and preservatives!

Check out my variation recipe baked tortillas strips that taste just perfect like this chips. And it pairs delicious with my pesto with cashews recipe.

    🍽 Key Ingredients

Air fryer tortilla chips take minutes to prepare with a drizzle of oil and a packet of tortillas. As long as you have an air fryer, you are ready to go.

    tortillas, salt and oil

Tortillas: it's important to use corn tortillas. Flour tortillas will not produce the crispiness required for this recipe.

Oil: Olive oil is used to coat the corn tortillas to add crispiness and flavor.

    Substitutions

You can substitute white corn tortillas for yellow corn tortillas. The white corn tortillas produce the same crispy results as the yellow variety - but need an extra minute or two in the air fryer.

    💭 Cooking tips

    Don't drench the tortillas!

You only need to lightly brush each tortilla with oil. Over oiling, the tortillas will prevent them from crisping to a perfect golden brown color, and they will turn soggy and burn.

    Tortilla size

We use 5-inch tortillas for this recipe cut into 4, but if you are using larger ones, cut them in half and then each half into 3 pieces.

    Watch the tortillas

It's important to keep an eye on the tortilla chips during cooking, as they turn from lovely golden brown to dark and burnt in minutes.

    Cooling

Don't worry if the tortilla chips aren't perfectly crisp after 4 minutes - they will crisp and become crunchy during cooling.

    Overfilling

Resist the urge to fill one air fryer basket than making more batches. You don't need to stack them in a single layer, but make sure there is enough space between each tortilla chip for the air to circulate freely.

    Turn the tortillas

You need to shake or turn the tortillas at the halfway point to get an even crisp on each chip.

    📋 Adding seasonings

If you want to add additional seasonings to your tortilla chips before you air fry them, make sure to mix them with oil first.

You want to avoid the spices from blowing off the chips. Spices tend to blow off the chips during frying when sprinkled on top. Mixing the spices with oil and lightly brushing it on the chips will prevent this from happening.

    Homemade seasoning recommendations:

Adobo seasoning: Mixed smoked paprika, chili powder, herbs, and garlic. It's Smokey and fragrant.

Keto taco seasoning: Mixed with paprika, chili powder, cumin, herbs, and more. It's spicy and makes amazingly flavorful chips.

Ranch seasoning: Mixed with dried herbs, garlic, and onion. Goes well with sour cream & chive dip.

    🥗 What to serve with

Air fryer tortilla chips are perfect for serving with salsa, dips, and for using as part of casseroles.

Salsa: Using those chips as a spoon and scooping up some delicious salsas is what Mexican snack food is all about. Try pico de gallo, cilantro & fresh lime juice salsa, or spicy chili salsa.

Dips: Great dips like guacamole, sour cream & chives, nacho cheese, or jalapeno dip are perfect for dipping in those crispy homemade tortilla chips.

Recipes: Make air fryer tortilla chips for other delicious recipes like nachos with cheese or chicken taco casserole.

    🙋 Frequently Asked Questions

Can I cook flour tortillas in an air fryer?

Yes, however, they will become chewy rather than crispy, and for this recipe, we want crispy tortillas. Flour tortillas are better used for wraps as they are softer

How do you stop tortillas from flying in the air fryer?

You can stop tortillas from flying in the air fryer by placing a trivet over the chips to prevent them from moving towards the fan.

    Can you refrigerate corn tortillas?

No, if you store cooked air-fried tortillas in the fridge, they will become soggy.

    🥫 Storage

The best way to store homemade tortilla chips is to let them cool completely before placing them in zip lock bags or an airtight container.

Keep them stored in a cupboard or dry place at room temperature. They will stay fresh for up to 10 days.
